Congrats to Canada's Ema Zajmovic who has become the first woman to win an open WPT Championship event in the tour's 15-year history. Zajmovic outlasted a 380-entry field to win the partypoker WPT Playground Main Event for C$241,500.
Zajmovic's Valentine’s Day victory at the Playground Poker Club in Montreal came after she qualified online at partypoker. It’s her biggest cash to date but it wasn’t her first WPT final table; she also finished fifth at WPT Montreal in November for C$102,010. Last summer she also cashed in the WSOP Main Event, finishing in 929th place for $15,000.
After her win, she said: “Honestly, I am really happy that I proved women can do it. The funniest and nicest part of this experience was all the women who came and were so supportive of me. It was amazing. When I started playing poker, there was so much competition between girls. It was hard to be good and be supportive of each other. Now it has evolved so much and it is nice to see I had support from older women, younger women.”
WPT fun continues this week at the spectacular Fallsview Casino Resort right next to Niagara Falls. The C$4700 + C$300 WPT Fallsview Poker Classic Main Event starts today (February 22). Later this month, the WPT LA Poker Classic is running at the Commerce Casino. The prestigious $10K buy-in Main Event takes place from February 25 to March 3 and is set to attract the biggest players in the world.
