Scottish player John Stirling is the new Genting Poker Series Newcastle champion after carving his way through a field of 287 players to win £11,490. Stirling came close to victory at GPS Newcastle only two years ago when he finished ninth for £2,360. After a short heads-up battle this year against Jonny Bowers, Stirling finally got his hands on the coveted GPS trophy when his A3 held against Bowers’ 58cc. Stirling is a regular in Scottish tourneys with multiple cashes in Edinburgh and Glasgow, but yesterday’s Newcastle win is by far his biggest cash to date and shows a good run of form; he was runner-up in the Grosvenor 25/25 in Edinburgh last July for £6,000. His live tournament winnings are now well over $40,000.
Next stop on the tour is Sheffield in March. The £440 buy-in Main Event has a guaranteed prize pool of £100,000 and first prize of £25,000. It’s a re-entry with buy ins accepted until the end of level 8. Players are limited to 8 entries (1 Entry plus 1 Re-entry, then a further 2 Re-entries per available Day 1)
One of the unique features of the Genting Poker Series tour is that if your chips total less than the starting stack when you’re bagging up, you can opt to hand them in and re-enter the following day.
There are 18 events planned for 2017 taking place right across the UK. All the “Mini” events have a £220 buy-in with £35,000 guarantee while the major £440 buy-in events – such as Sheffield in March, Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex, in May, Liverpool in August, Edinburgh in October, boast a £100k guarantee.
The Genting Poker Series is a fantastic national tour that uses local casinos to provide that 'big' tournament experience at affordable buy ins. MainEventTravel is the tour’s Official Travel Partner and we’ve negotiated a number of deals at hotels local to all the stops so don’t hesitate to get in touch if you’re planning a trip.
