As Summer draws to a close, many poker players are eyeing up Las Vegas for their next poker vacation. Autumn in Las Vegas means comfortable temperatures – around the mid-70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit – making it the ideal time to explore the iconic Las Vegas Strip, lounge by the pool without getting totally sunburnt, discover the city's hidden gems, or even head out of town to stunning places such as Lake Mead, Hoover Dam and Red Rock Canyon.
Visiting Las Vegas in the Autumn brings a host of other benefits too. While there’s no shortage of world-class poker action, the city is far less crowded than in Summer: queues are shorter, restaurant bookings are easier and hotel bargains abound. You’re also more likely to find really affordable prices for shows and tours.
This Autumn also heralds a thrilling schedule of sport with inaugural Formula 1 Grand Prix hitting town from November 16 to 18, the Canelo Alvarez versus Jermall Charlo boxing match taking place at the T-Mobile Arena on September 30 and a string of great football matches between local heroes Las Vegas Raiders and the New England Patriots (October 15), the New York Giants (November 5), the Kansas City Chiefs (November 26) and the Minnesota Vikings (December 10).
Staying in Vegas
When it comes to accommodation, MainEventTravel has rooms available at hotels all over the city this Autumn, to suit budgets of all kinds. This is a great time to snag a bargain stay right on the Vegas strip (perhaps not so affordable in the height of WSOP season) but also to explore other areas of the city.
New attractions
The Sphere
There are also a bunch of amazing new attractions in Las Vegas opening this Autumn. Chief among them is The Sphere (pictured below)– a much-heralded futuristic new entertainment area that lies just east of the Venetian Resort. With a capacity of 18,600, the world’s largest spherical structure cost some $2.3 billion to build making it the most expensive entertainment venue in the city. Its bowl-shaped theatre contains the world’s highest-resolution wraparound LED screen but even if you don’t go in, you’ll certainly be able to admire The Sphere from outside. The exterior is being illuminated 24/7 with animations and other imagery. The Sphere is being officially launched by U2 on September 29 with a series of 25 concerts built around the Irish band’s landmark 1991 album Achtung Baby.
Atomic Golf (pictured below) at the Strat is set to open in time for the Formula One Las Vegas Grand Prix on Nov. 18. This 100,000 square-foot, four-storey golf and entertainment complex will host next-generation golf technology with an immersive experience through gameplay. The project will host four stories with 103 hitting bays facing the stunning Red Rock Canyon, eight putting bays featuring projection mapping technology, six bars – including a featured tap room with 15 locally brewed beers, meeting spaces and a 12,000-square-foot Astrocade with giant-screen televisions and a sports bar atmosphere
Durango Casino and Resort (pictured below) is a brand new casino opening in the Las Vegas Valley on November 20 featuring 83,000 square feet of casino space, 200 hotel rooms, a stunning pool, free parking and 15 restaurants including a steakhouse, a modern Mexican Restaurant, the Summerhouse beach restaurant, the Bel-Aire Lounge cocktail bar and a 25,000-square-foot Eat Your Heart Out food hall, along with The George Sportsmen’s Lounge offering food and drinks, live entertainment, bar-top gaming and sports viewing on a 56-foot-long LED screen.
Autumn is also a great time to catch top stars in action. Lady Gaga is doing five nights at Park MGM in October while, in November, Adele is followed by Rod Stewart at Caesar’s Palace. Vegas is world-renowned for spectacles such as the aquatic Cirque du Soleil extravaganza “O" and the quirky "Blue Man Group" show – all easier to get into once the summer crowds have dissipated. And then there’s Halloween – a great shout for a Las Vegas visit with a ton of weekend events around the city from extravagant fancy-dress galas to Halloween-themed club nights.
