Kris Steinbach was just at risk of bubbling Day 2 of the Main. He shoved for 75k under the gun and was called by Clayon Littke from the button. It was a classic race between for Littke and pocket fives for Steinbach. There was an ace on the flop and Steinbach stood up to start collecting his things, but a river five saved his life.

In the next hand, Sam Ngai lost his stack in action I didn't see meaning Steinbach rode his stand-up equity to a bag tonight. Stay tuned for the 20 qualifying stacks out shortly.

Day 1a ended with 5:46 remaining in Level 16.

Rob Limpert just hit the rail 7 off the bags after he shoved his short stack over an under-the-gun open from Joseph Anderson to 11k. Limpert didn't have much more than that and when it folded back to Anderson he tossed in the call without a count.

Limpert was in rough with against for Anderson. There was no miracle for Limpert and a queen on the flop left Limpert drawing thin.

I arrived at the table with the flop reading . Big blind James Werry called a bet from Sam Ngai in early position to see on the turn. Werry check-called again, this time for 15k. On the river he switched it up, firing 30k into the middle. Ngai had a bit of a think about it and sent his hand to the muck.

There are just 42 players left in today's flight with action proceeding until there are 20 players left. Level 11 has a bit less than 15 minutes remaining with the next break scheduled following Level 12. The average stack right now is a still a bit more than 50 big blinds, so there's no reason to assume they'll be sprinting down to 20. There's a good chance today's flight goes into Level 15 at least before they find some bags.

The numbers are now official with 150 entries on the board for Day 1a. That puts the 1a prize portion at $141,075 for an increase of about $10k over last year's Day 1a total, which saw 140 entries for $131,670 in prizes.

With 150 entries, that means that 20 players will get a bag delivered to them at the end of the night. The remaining field is down to 48 players left now, so they are just 28 eliminations away from the end of Day 1a. There is no hard stop on the day today - the action will go as long as it takes to play down to 20 players, with Day 1b doing the same. Day 2 will then begin at the earliest blind level Day 1 ended in with the remainder of that level playing out as a 40-minute Day 1 level and 60-minute Day 2 levels starting on the first full level of Day 2, no matter what the level number is.

This is somewhat different from previous Main Events on the PPT where Day 1 had a specific number of levels scheduled, and those levels always played out at 40 minutes. This year, even if Day 2 begins earlier than the previous Day 1 end levels, the 60-minute Day 2 levels will kick in immediately.

Day 1a will play until there are 12.5% of the field remaining, which would be 19 players at the current numbers, but that will jump to 20 with two more entries today.

The prize pool is now almost $105k with 111 entries on the board and Level 5 about halfway finished. Last year, 1a got 140 entries, so today's flight is now just 29 entries away from tying last year, so it looks like a decent bet that the 2024 1a will be as big or bigger than last year.

The Day 1a field is now up to 106, 37 away from last year's 1a total. That puts the prizes on entry shy of $100k with nearly 5 hours left to enter the game. I just had another wander around the room and a few of the players I noticed in the action were Talal Shoush, DJ Sharma, Quentin Siffledeen, Sheraz Nasir, Lee Clark, Haven Taylor, Tony Nguyen, Greg Maddux, Brian "BA" Anderson, Russ Sluchinski, Ross Wilson (who has a short stack right now but smiled and said "Watch me run it up" as I passed by), Ashkan Razavi in from Vancouver, Eddie Seagris, Thomas Taylor, and Johnny Yu.

They are now one entry shy of $90k in prizes with 95 entries on the board now. Level 4 has played about 5 minutes and entries are open until the start of Level 10, so there is still plenty of time to get into the game today. Among the other players I've spotted so far today include Stephen Dauphinais, who bagged 3rd place in the Milly Maker in Vegas this summer for $650k, as well as Keith Schultz. Jolnar Teliani and Ian Alvarado, both of whom final-tabled the NLH game last night, and Colten Yamagishi. That's still far from a comprehensive list, but I'll add more names as the day goes on.

It's a decent field of more than 90 entries about to go on their first break of Day 1a. Among the players I spotted on the first few tables I looked at are Ben Sarnelli, Ed Zurawell Kris Steinbach, Rob Limpert, Glenn Tarasoff Pam MacNaughton, Ali Khani, Tiny Hoang, Brian Wells, and Hari Aujla.

There are just under 20 minutes to play in Level 3 with the Day 1a  field at an impressive 86 already. That puts the prizes so far at $80,883 with lots of time to enter today as well as a full 1b flight tomorrow. Looks like this could be a decent Main - in January, Day 1a got 169 entries so they are still a way off from that total, however they are already ahead of Calgary's numbers for 1a at PPT #2 this year. Last year, this summer Argyle series Main got 140 entries, so today is now about 50 entries away from last year's total.

It's time for the big game here at PPT #3 - The Main Event. Day 1a action gets going at 1 pm on Friday, and that will be the first of two starting flights for the Main. They'll redo another Day 1 on Saturday with the same format before all surviving stacks recombine for Day 2 and the prizes on Sunday. There might be a Day 3 on Monday for the final table, depending on how Sunday plays.

Players sit down to the table with 30k in chips, and Day 1 levels are 40 minutes in length. That jumps up to 60 minutes for Day 2 play and those 60-minute levels will kick in as soon as Day 2 begins. If Day 1 bags part-way through a level, that level will finish on Day 2 at 40 minutes, with the blinds jumping to 60 minutes for the following level. With the Day 1 end structure this year, we don't know exactly when Day 1 will end or what level it will be - that will all be revealed as the Day 1 flights play out. Day 2 will begin at the earliest endpoint for either Day 1.

This will be my main focus for the day on Friday and Saturday, though I'll try to keep my eyes on the numbers for the side events at the same time.
